Baška :

Baška, which is often described as the "pearl of the Croatian Adriatic", is located in the southeast of the island of Krk. Geografically speaking, Baška is the last place to reach on the island, but the leading tourist resort on the island and wider, alongside with Krk It is also the winner of many prestigious tourist awards which places it at the top of Croatian tourism. The town has a long tradition in tourism: in 2004 Baška celebrated 100 years of organized tourism. One of the advertising slogans of those bygone days was "Straight from your room to the sea".
The town is located in a beautiful green valley through which the island's only "river" flows (Vela Rika). Other settlements in the valley are Baška Draga, Jurandvor and Batomalj. If you prefer true peace, if you want to hear the chirping symphony of crickets at night, then try one of these places which all have a wide range of high category rooms and apartments in private accommodation. Your kind hosts will offer you figs, tomatoes, wine and brandy, produce from their own gardens and vineyards.
Baška is best known for one of the longest and most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, often described in brochures as a "paradise" beach. This 1800m long shingle beach with a sandy sea bottom is especially suitable for children, non-swimmers and older people. The "Blue Flag" fluttering on the beach is a sign of cleanliness and high international standards of environmental protection. Besides this beach, for those in search of romance there are about thirty smaller beaches accessible by boat, hidden in the shade of pine trees. When was the last time you made sandcastles and collected shells and pebbles of different shapes ? If you find a shell, take it home, and in the dull winter months you will hear the waves and feel the freshness of the sea.
For those fond of walking and recreation, there are over 80km of marked hiking trails (most of them suitable for biking,too) in the mountains surrounding the valley. Lovers of paragliding, mountain and free climbing have already discovered the charms of these mountains. There are also favorable conditions and facilities for sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving, hunting, fishing, jogging, tennis, and football. We have already mentioned the Baška Tablet from 1100, one of the oldest inscriptions in Old Croatian. It was found in the church of St.Lucy in Jurandvor, now the site of many cultural events in summer: exhibitions, concerts performances, which all take place in an ambience that must be experienced. The island of Krk is considered the cradle of Croatian literacy and the Baška Tablet has made Jurandvor and Baška renowned as the cradle of Croatian culture. Worth mentioning is also the shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain in Batomalj, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the whole valley, the baroque parish church of the Holy Trinity, the church of St.Mark, the little church of St.Michael, the cemetery and church of St.John with its bell tower guarding over the bay and offering a lovely panoramic view of the islands Prvic and Rab. Don't forget your camera! We believe you will be equally thrilled by the narrow picturesque streets and old houses of our fishermen and peasants in the old part of Baška. Feel the special atmosphere of the old town, and if you enjoy taking photographs, trust us, you'll need a lot of time… One thing you might want to photograph is the first house built in the old town in 1525. Have a cup of coffee in one of the smaller cafés or a glass of wine in a wine cellar in the old town, or in the harbour at the waterfront, and you will feel the past and romance in the air. The Heritage Museum and numerous galleries are in the old part of town. Come and feel the past…
If you like to sip your morning coffee and browse through the newspapers at peace, go to the waterfront in the harbour. When was the last time that you sat in a café by the sea enjoying a steaming capuccino, and waited for the fishermen to return ? Have you ever been night fishing and felt the smell of freshly caught fish? If you're fond of walking in the surrounding mountains or to the nearby coves, you'll find not only virgin beaches but also remains of ancient settlements, some over 1500 years old.
