The town of Punat is located on the southwestern side of the island in a picturesque, sheltered bay.
The islet of Košljun, an "island on an island" and unique cultural and historical locality dominates the whole bay. The islet has been living a full life for hundreds of years and is still the home of Franciscan friars and their monastery. Numerous day trippers visit the islet and its monastery, church, library (over 30 000 historical books, the oldest dating from 1471), ethnographic collection and unique natural history collection (shells, stuffed animals). Attend the Christmas Mass on Košljun in a full church and be part of the special atmosphere and Christmas spirit. Classical music concerts are held on the islet throughout the year. On an area of only 68 000 m2 there are 540 different species of plants and mushrooms, which is almost half of the number registered on the vast area of Great Britain.
Punat is also known for its marina, the biggest one in the Adriatic. It is the hometown of hardworking peasants, fishermen, shipbuilders, bee keepers and olive growers. Olive oil produced in Punat is exquisite and one of the best in Europe. The olive has become synonymous with Punat. The local people have been involved in tourism for many years and have incorporated their high quality olive oil in their tourist offer, so you can enjoy many meals and delicacies based on olive oil in the town's numerous restaurants and wine cellars. You can also take part in olive picking and see the olive oil production process at the beginning of November, which is a truly exceptional experience.
If you like walking in nature, there are many marked shepherds' trails along the surrounding hills and rises. Take a walk, see the olive groves, dry stone walls, shepherds' shelters, and reach the peaks with breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and surrounding area.
We have already mentioned that the local people are great fishermen. Every morning you can see the fishermen's boats coming in, and buy some freshly caught fish after having your morning coffee.
Punat offers accommodation in a few pleasant and comfortable hotels, there are private apartments and villas of high quality, as well as a few campsites.
Just a few kilometres from Punat lies the picturesque fishing village of Stara Baška with its lovely and unique bay and beach.
