OMISALJ, a town and port in the north-western part of the island of Krk. Situated on a knoll (82 m) above the sea, the large Omisalj Bay, which is well protected from all winds except from north-westerlies.
Although Omišalj is mentioned in the XII. century as "Castri musculi" (from the Latin "Ad musculi" – the place of shells), it has prehistoric foundations.
Its evolution can be followed from the Liburnian and Roman times over the Krk princes Frankopans to the present times. Since the eleventh century, Omišalj has been an important centre of literacy and Glagoliticism. The first written monuments have their origins in the twelfth century.
Omišalj is located in the northwestern part of the island of Krk, in the area where the island is closest to the land. Omišalj stands on a steep cliff and dominates the surrounding area of the bay of Kvarner.
Today's Omišalj, thanks to the climate, vicinity of the bridge, the airport and the town of Rijeka, combines very wisely the tourist trade and the industry into it's economy.
