GORSKI KOTAR - (the Green Heart of Croatia) is the integral part of the Primorsko-goranska County. It is a highland with forests , and you pass through it on your way from Zagreb to Rijeka. The centar of the region is the town of Delnice, and some other famous places are Mrkopalj, Cabar, Fužine, Lic, Ravna Gora, Skrad, Vrbovsko and Brod Moravice.
The National Park "Risnjak" is located in this part of Croatia.
Gorski kotar abounds in natural beauties and particularities, with some parts completely uninhabiteted and wild, as the de-population stroke this area after the Second World War.
In the recent years, Gorski kotar is slowly reviving, more so through innitiatives of individuals,then through planned systematic measures from the Governement or other governmental institutions.
DELNICE - The area of the Town of Delnice consists of the so-called Delnice "trefoil" - Delnice, the Crni Lug - Risnjak region and the Kupa valley. Delnice is also the central and biggest settlement in Gorski kotar.
Situated at 698 metres above sea level and surrounded by the high grounds of Drgomalj, Petehovac and Japlenški vrh, Delnice is the highest town in Croatia. It is particularly recommended for sportsmen's high altitude training, for recreational activities for walks and outings in the country, while in winter it is a real "bait" for all those who are fond of snow and of winter sports.
Crni Lug, on the other hand, is an idillic settlement in Gorski kotar - white in winter and a floral point of departure for the National Park Risnjak in summer.
Those who like active holidays will find the Kupa valley here, with the marvellous Kupa river that offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking or rafting, sports, fishing and buzzer fishing, for bathing and also an unforgettable experience of the clean mountain river.
